Patxi’s in San Francisco opens!

Patxi’s Pizza (pronounced Pah-cheese) in downtown Palo Alto opened a year or so ago and not only did they have great pizza, but it was a convenient alternative to Zach’s in Berkeley and Oakland.

There’s long been a rumor of a Patxi opening in San Francisco, and now it’s no longer a rumor.

Now the question is, are they any good?

Let’s put it this way. San Francisco (and peninsula) people have long frequented Zach’s because they didn’t have any other choice for decent Chicago-style pizza. While the Pizza at Zach’s was good their service wasn’t so great, they were overcrowded, and their had stupid rules based on the whims of the owner. For example, you can’t order a spinach pizza. You *can* order a spinach and mushroom pizza, hold the mushrooms, and get charged for two ingredients.

No kidding.

But I haven’t answered the question of are the pies any good. Let me say they’re awesome!. The crust is buttery and flaky, very close to Lou Malnati’s. Their sauce is also less acidic than Zach’s. Good for people with sensitive stomachs.

Of course, this all applies to their Chicago style thick crust pizza. I’ve never had their thin, and can’t imagine ordering it when I have the choice of thick, gooey, yummy Chicago pizza minutes from where I live.

Turns out they deliver as well, so I can pick up the phone and have pizza goodness appear at my doorstep.

Update 12/22/05: I just picked up some pizza and they’re not currently delivering from the SF location and they don’t have any plans to do so in the near future.

I look at it as one more reason to get out of the house.

Digg!
